The story of Avacyn Restored takes place on Innistrad and centers on the events after the opening of the Helvault. Before the story of Avacyn Restored takes place the Demon Griselbrand had tricked Avacyn, Archangel and protector of Innistrad, into getting drawn into the Helvault along with himself. The Helvault was a magical prison to confine demons.
At the onset of the events of Innistrad the Planeswalker Liliana Vess has come to the plane of Innistrad to reclaim her soul, which she had traded to four demons in exchange for beauty and power. She eventually claimed a dark artifact known as the Chain Veil, capable of massive amounts of powerful magic. Liliana used the power of the Veil to kill one of her 4 demons masters, Kothophed, and she has tracked her next target, Griselbrand, to Innistrad. During her search for the demon, Liliana once again came into contact with Garruk, whom she had already placed a curse upon with the Chain Veil. However, Liliana was able to elude Garruk by distracting him with a cluster of zombies. After reaching Thraben and reviving the deceased Mikaeus, she learns of Griselbrand's imprisonment along with Avacyn in the Helvault. Liliana is unable to open the Helvault herself, though, and thus blackmails Thalia, a leader of the remnants of humanity, to open it. The opening frees Avacyn, Griselbrand, and the other demons trapped in the Helvault. While Liliana completes her quest for killing Griselbrand, Avacyn restores power to the Humans of Innistrad and controls the monster population, driving away zombies and turning werewolves into the wolfir, subservient guardians to humankind.
